Big Bang Theory
Organized by the MacKenzie Art Gallery
The success of the television series The Big Bang Theory points to a growing interest in “nerd culture,” a unique fusion of hard science and high fantasy. This exhibition explores the importance of this trend through an adventurous mix of works from the MacKenzie Art Gallery’s permanent collection. Both art and science are powered by curiosity and a desire to see “what happens if…” A number of the works generate the same pleasure that a scientist might take in an elegantly designed experiment. Fantasy plays an equally strong role through alien vistas and superhero icons. Presiding over the exhibition is Ron Noganosh’s monumental Forget Me Not, an image of a “big bang” of another type, with the word “Hiroshima” spelled out in tiny paper umbrellas. As this artwork reminds us, science fiction can become science fact with impacts that affect us all.
